Young Women's First Exams |

The American College of Ob/Gyn has new recommendations for when young women should undergo their first gynecology visit. For a young woman with no issues or problems and who has never been sexually active, a first exam is appropriate at 21 years of age. In a young woman with issues or who is considering sexual activity, anytime is appropriate. We prefer to see young women before they become sexually active for counseling and contraception if appropriate. If sexually active, annual exams are appropriate. We strive to make the office a comfortable environment for all our patients; we especially seek to make a young woman’s first visit to the gynecologist as relaxing as possible. We explain what we do before the actual exam. We give the young woman a sense of control.
